How to Care for House Plants

Whether it’s the plant’s preferred humidity, lighting conditions, or soil that isn’t right, it’s important to know how to take care of houseplants correctly.

Follow these guidelines when growing indoor houseplants and you’ll have healthy, happy plants for years to come. – Make sure the room where you’re growing the plant is the right temperature. You can’t expect blue flowers if your house is too hot or too cold. You can find a plant journal to record the temperature in the room where you’re growing your plant. Look for a plant journal to make sure you’re following the correct temperature guidelines

– Water your plants appropriately. We all know that plants are known for their water retention, but not too much – or too little. Once you’ve found the right amount that suits your plant, stick with it. This will also help prevent root rot. I also use a moisture meter! It’s very handy and reliable. Take them out once in a while to wash them down and inspect for any bugs.

– Fertilize plants appropriately.

Only feed your plants when you know how. If you’re unsure, leave it out of the container and see if you can smell the fertilizer. Smell is also an indicator of proper plant nutrients. A rule I use is to fertilize/feed your plants at every other watering in the Spring/Summer time and much less during the fall/winter season.

– Don’t let a plant sit in water.

Air Purifying House Plants

Snake plant (Good for humidity)

The snake plant is a great houseplant for purifying the air. It has a thick stem that can grow to 5 feet, so it can easily grow upwards, purifying the air around it. It has a natural humidity-reducing quality and won’t let any harmful toxins pass through its leaves. The snake plant also has an interesting ability to purify the air in an entire room – making it a great addition to indoor environments with poor air quality.

The dracaena is a popular, easy-to-grow houseplant. Its large leaves provide a lot of shade, so it can grow in low light conditions, and it grows very rapidly. It has a wide variety of colors and grows well indoors, so it can be easily maintained. It is a great air purifier and can provide a lot of humidity in the room, thanks to its large leaves.

Spider Plant

The spider plant is an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance houseplant that has light green leaves, grows very rapidly, and is very easy to take care of. It is a great air purifier and has a natural humidity-reducing quality to prevent excessive moisture buildup in the air.

Pothos Plant

The pothos plant is a trailing vine that has pointed, heart shaped green leaves.  There are some variegated kinds with white, yellow or lighter green colors. They like bright, indirect light but can also thrive in low light areas.  Pothos are easy-to-grow and only watered when the soil has mostly dried out.
